About Us

PCS is a co-educational independent day school enrolling almost 200 students in grades 6-12.  Founded over 95 years ago, PCS
offers an academic, college preparatory education to students who are preparing for, or already pursuing, careers in the performing arts, entertainment or competitive sports, or who are drawn to a creative environment supportive of the arts.

Since its founding, PCS has supported the notion that young people's dreams can be realized without sacrificing their education.  Today, PCS provides a rigorous liberal arts program that prepares students for acceptances to the most competitive colleges and universities.  Like most schools, PCS conducts classes from 8:00 a.m. until 2:40 p.m., Monday through Friday, September through June.  Unlike other schools, PCS allows students to be absent from classes for valid professional reasons, such as attending an audition, competing in another city, or to prepare for a  recital.  While this option is always available, there is no substitute for classroom learning and most students attend  class everyday.  PCS is a college preparatory school, and while the arts are woven throughout the curriculum, students pursue professional training at other institutions, such as The Juilliard School, the School of American Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Manhattan School of Music, the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, Mannes College of Music and the Skating Club of New York.

Supporting the Arts
Celebrating the Mind

The school’s concentrated and flexible schedule allows time for practice, rehearsals and auditions. Self-reliance is stressed and students are given responsibility for the effective use of time to complete their work and professional assignments. Scheduling and assignments often reflect a high degree of individualization. In addition, students who must miss school for professional reasons (whether the absence is due to a morning rehearsal or a 6-week theatrical tour) are provided with assignments to be completed during time away from the classroom.

We invite you to read about the history of the Professional Children's School and to meet its Headmaster, Dr. James Dawson.
